Embark on a Journey Through Time: Exploring the Great Pyramid of Giza

The Great Pyramid of Giza, the largest of the ancient Egyptian pyramids, stands proudly in Al-Giza, Egypt. Construction of the Great Pyramid began around 2580 BCE as a tomb for Pharaoh Cheops, son of Senefru, the founder of the 4th Dynasty. Contrary to Greek beliefs that the pyramids were built by slaves, archaeologists have discovered evidence of skilled workers who were paid for their labor. These workers even lived in towns built near the construction site.

An estimated 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing up to 17 tons, make up the pyramid’s structure. These blocks were transported up and down the Nile River from a nearby quarry. Incredibly, a block was likely set in place every two and a half minutes!

The exact method used to lift these massive stones to such heights in a pre-wheel era remains a mystery. However, one theory suggests the use of ramps lined with wooden tracks. After 20 years of construction, involving an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 workers, the pyramid reached its final height of 480 feet.

Inside the pyramid lie three burial chambers: a rough-hewn chamber, the Queen’s Chamber, and the King’s Chamber, located at the highest point and containing a red granite sarcophagus. Sadly, most pyramids were plundered for treasures by the time of the Middle Kingdom.

Despite this, the Great Pyramid of Giza stands as the sole remaining wonder of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It serves as a powerful testament to human achievement and a reminder of a bygone era. At the end of your exploration, your coach will return you comfortably to your hotel.
