Egypt visa, Egypt weather, Egypt currency and what to wear in Egypt

Important information to travel to Egypt:

  1. Egypt Visa

It’s always best to check with your local Egyptian embassy or consulate before travel but most visitors currently require a tourist visa ($US25 for 30-day single entry) in order to enter Egypt. These can be obtained prior to travel via the e-visa portal (currently for citizens of 46 countries only) or you can obtain it at the arrival at Cairo airport and we are pretty sure that the following nationalities will be able to obtain it at the arrival or online very easily:

  • Countries Eligable for obtaining Visa upon arrival in Cairo:

USA, All European countries, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, UK, Australia.

Note that your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival.

  1. Egypt weather

Egypt’s weather can generally be characterised as hot, dry and sunny (an average 80% sunshine during daylight hours…not bad!) Winters are mild in comparison to much of Europe and North America with an average January high in Cairo of 19°C/66°F, though it can get decidedly chilly when the sun goes down. Annual rainfall is very low throughout the country (though much wetter on the north coast in winter) whilst the summer months can be extremely hot – July’s Cairo average high is a toasty 35°C/95°F. The best time to visit is between October and May when daytime temperatures are generally very pleasant – just remember to pack your fleece for the evening.

  1. What to wear in Egypt

Egypt is an (albeit moderate) Islamic society so conservative is best.  A good general rule is to cover up from shoulder to below knee and females should keep a scarf or shawl handy for covering heads during mosque visits – though tourist mosques will provide if you forget. While during your visits to other tourist sites you don’t have to wear scarfs. A wide brimmed hat and sunglasses will protect you from the sun while comfortable, strong trainers/sneakers or walking sandals will help deal with uneven surfaces in temples and on pavements. The above applies to most areas apart from the Red Sea resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab and Hurghada where it’s considered perfectly respectable to wear shorts and tee-shirts, while you are at (5*stars hotels) females can feel free to wear Bikini; swimwear should only be worn on the beach though. Light cotton is best for day wear all-year round for those more used to cooler climates and winter visitors should pack a fleece or warm jacket.

  1. Egypt Currency

Egypt’s currency is the Egyptian pound, (EGP) known locally as LE which stands for livre Égyptienne; French for Egyptian pound.

Debit and credit cards are widely accepted and you’re never very far away from an ATM if/when cash is  required.
Cash (EGP is best but USD is often accepted, especially in tourist areas) is often preferred in many of the corner kiosks though this is changing rapidly and many will now take cards. Electronic payment facilities are being installed at major tourist sites and should be online by the end of 2023, until then entrance fees can only be paid for in EGP cash.

Foreign currency can be exchanged in banks, bureau de change and a limited number of ATMs, and till today in which we wrote this article (23rd January, 2023) 1 USD equals 29.75 EGP and of course this is up & down.
