Beginning construction in 2580 BCE, the Great pyramid was built for Pharaoh Cheops, son of Senefru the founder of the 4th Dynasty. The Greeks believed that the Pharaohs used slave labor to complete the grand project, however archaeologists have since discovered that they were built be paid skilled workers & these manual laborer lived in towns near the construction site.
The construction consists of an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks weighing up to 17 tons each. These were carried up & down the Nile River from a nearby quarry. During its construction a block were have to be set every two and half minute.
It’s unknown how exactly the ancient Egyptians were able to lift the heavy stone blocks to the top of the pyramids, in the time before the wheel was invented, however theory suggests that ramps were used with wooden slits. When the pyramid was completed twenty years later it stood at 480 feet tall, it had taken 20 to 30 thousand workers to build the structure.
Inside, there are three burial chambers, one in rough condition, the Queen’s Chamber and at the highest point in the center the King’s burial Chamber containing a red granite sarcophagus. Most of the pyramids were fully robbed for their treasures by the time the middle kingdom began. The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World and the only one to remain mainly intact, remain as reminder of what once was here and of what human being can achieve at their best.
